I know with the advancements of cell phones and whatnot, this is a dead technology but there is still a lot of ppl playing on the Citizens Band.

CB is like the IRC of the airwaves - I've never been into it but I know a lot of people are still bigtime into CB and HAM radio. In fact, just the other day I saw some old fella driving around in a 90's-era corvette with a huge outrigger whip antenna. It was at least 10' tall and had some kind of spiral thing at the base enclosing the whip.

It was such an outlandish rig, I meant to snap a pic but traffic didn't allow so I reluctantly chose safe driving instead...

There a several trucks here in west Texas with "radio operator" license plates on their vehicles. They are covered with antennas and probably throw sparks while driving.

2 of these trucks are part of the local weather spotters so they are justified in their use of antennas, but the others I've seen are far from weather spotters. They are more of the skoal spit stained, rusted truck, pit bull in the bed, 4 mis-matched tires, 6 pack of natty light kind of guys. I can only guess why they have mobile radios.

Back to the weather spotters. The weather here in west Texas is pretty volatile, and unpredictable so they are very much needed.

I guess I'm just an asshole, but do use CB, or military radio speak on my cell phone at times. For fun, you should try it at the drive-thru sometime. It really throws em for loop.

10-10 on the side. Over and out.
Eric

I was curious. I started back when Licenses were required but never did. Southern Cali is where I started. I talked mobile and base up till Dec '99 and I turned off my radio. In Dec '09 I bought a Grand Cherokee and decided to see what was up. some of my old pals are still out here and lots of new ones. I don't like HAMs for the most part because most started as CBers and since have gotten an arrogant attitude towards CB operators.

Anyway, I'm about 4 grand into it now in the jeep. My FCC 4 watt legal limit TX is now in the neighborhood of 4k watts Smile

Gonna be doin the old lightsabre trick with your setup eh? hah!
What's the deal with this "4 watt legal" crap anyway? What good is a radio with a 2 mile range in any REAL situation. say on the trail with some buddies and somethin happens.
I used to do a yearly get together rally/club with some samurai owners back in '01-06 but not anymore. Cell phones didn't do didly squat where we were at half the time.

I used to have a nice 40 channel Motorola hand held. Worked great for road trips, and making draft buddies with truckers. It was cheap, like $60 or something like that about 10 years ago.

same is true for were we go off roading. We get some signal on the peaks of mountains, but in the valleys, forget about it

If you wanted to start something, a cheap but solid setup would be say

Cobra 25 LTD CB
Wilson 1000, or 500 magnet or trunk-lip mount antenna, comes either way

I know folks in Chicago I can hook you into for further info on tweaking things if it's something you do and like. From there its, sky's the limit Smile. Most CBs come out of the box doing about 1/3 what they can do after a full tuneup / alignment. So out of the box they leave a lot to be desired. The nice thing about the 25LTD is they are fairly compact and huge potential going forward. One you wont outgrow. I use the 29 LTD myself, but it's a bit larger physically.

They are a blast especially if you commute a lot. First thing is to figure out what the local channels ppl are on in your area. 19 is the trucker channel typically but local operators almost never run that channel. We run 8 here in WA in my location. In fact, I got my handle from CB, Stresstest. So I have been doing it way longer than PC games / Internet.

A little factoid you all never knew about me lol

You can get most of it from hyelectronics.com

Yeah, I'm in the car all day. Thought it might be a nice diversion. I'm in a 2010 Santa Fe. What antenna would you use for that?

Incidentally. I almost bought a company that was for sale about a year and a half ago, but didn't know anything about the industry, so didn't bite on it. They make amps and power mauls. Ever hear of XForce?

wow, small world. I know xforce, and they are 100% douchery. They are however one of the largest custom mobile amp makers out there. If you still have a contact, get me a 400 AMP motor Maul. I could use one Smile

I'll post an ass load of pictures shortly of what my Jeep is looking like

A wilson 5000 on the top of that thing (Magnet) would do really well right dead center.

Something you have to remember when you install one of these things is that you need to "Match the SWR" on the antenna

What this means is that radio waves travel at different wavelengths depending on the frequency they are at. Cobra 25's have a built in SWR function so no need to get other equipment, and the instructions are in the manual. Basically you take a measurement at channel 1 and 40. YOu adjust the stinger whip that comes out of the antenna with a set screw till you get the same reading (Lowest you can go) on 1 and 40. You want to have an end result at or less than 1.5:1. A perfect match is 1:1 meaning all of the radio energy is leaving the antenna and not reflecting back. It all works like a mirror, when you get an even match nothing is coming back, it's all going out over the air.

More on this later once you are there.

I would really like to talk more about xforce.

I'm just ripping these off of my forum, so if some of the text doesn't make sense to anyone, ask. Everyone on my forum is into radio as that is the center of the board.

This is the Antenna install, remember I am using big watts so I need a big antenna

-------------------------------

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7SYDvppL-Q

Inside cab, sanded to bare metal

Outside holes

Anti-Ox put on and backing plate, mount and coax installed (LMR400)

Outside shot of mount. Waiting on silicone to cure before using an exacto knife to trim the excess

Whats left of the Radio Shack 102" that was used for the stinger. I cut off 34 inches

The Anti-Ox compount, Noalox (HomeDepot 6 bucks) No one there knows what it is and I had to have someone look for it in the computer to find it. Just as an FYI, if you go there to get it, you can find it in the isle where the light switches are, in the section where the crimp connectors are.

Antenna installed on the Fatboy puck with quick-release (100 bucks + extra for 8x8 backing plate) http://www.Chargercharger.com

To truly understand how massive this coil antenna is, here is a large bottle of Windex on top next to it to give you an idea

MFJ Antenna Analyzer gave me a 1:1 match on it for approx 100 channels before it started to move the meter. I am simply amazed at how broad-banded this antenna is. The coil is made by a man Named Terry in Florida. He goes by 55 and this is the 55r4 model I used. 80 bucks shipped minus the 20 dollar rat shack whip

My 4000 Cranking Amps battery reserve

Batteries, box etc...

Banged it all out yesterday and things are much happier in the rig now Smile

Carpet? No. I am not happy with the box, so I am gonna rebuild it at another time, then it will get the felt carpet treatment like the speaker box

Jumpers are hand made using bulk 1/0 cable, blow torch, vice, silver solder, flux paste and heatshrink

So the two boxes on the battery box are the two amplifiers.

The little one on the left (I have painted it black) is my "Driver". The Cobra 29 hits it with all of its output and this little guy converts 4 watts into 725 watts. It then hits the big silver one to the right with the four fans, and that one goes into the 3200+ watt range and out to the antenna.

So basically when I press that little button on the side of my microphone, I instantly draw about 430 AMPS of power from the whole system

That 400 amp motormaul I was mentioning earlier is a device that goes between the charging system and the 4 batteries. The Big amp only also connects to it. The motormaul lets me dial the volts up to the big amp alone .. up to 20 volts. The amp is built for it. They are typically called competition amps. getting 3k watts at 13.8 volts changes to about 6500 watts at 20 volts. The nice thing about motormauls is they are adjustable and you dont have to "overclock" that hard, I could cruise at say 18 volts and be safer.

Dude, that's the kind of shit that I saw over at XForce. Huge ass amps and massive antennas, 4, 6, 8 10 batteries...the kind of shit that bleeds into your computer speakers from 3 blocks away when a mofo like you drives down the street with the key down. Razz Those guys had a Suburban there that you would not believe. it was their competition rig. They used to drive it all over the country and from the looks of all the trophies and awards and shit, they were pretty damn successful at it.

Not sure if I need another money pit hobby. Was just looking to do something small scale to pass the time since I spend on average 6 hours a day in the car.

Think I'll call you this week

I posted this on another forum and I am sure this Xforce thing will get a kick out of the community

Question: Do you wire this thing into the radio speakers or use an external or what? And why do some people sound like they're in an echo chamber?

The radio comes with a speaker in it. You can go external as all CBs has an external jack on the back of them. I use an old Motorola speaker on mine, I think they sound the best, but you get lucky at yard sales to get em. I found mine at a swap meet for 3 dollars Smile Echo's? Yea, they are added to radios or come with some of the higher end models made. You can also get after market microphones that have them built in them. I personally modified my Cobra to add a digital adjustable echo board internally. I just mine so it adds just a trailing edge so it isn't over done like the hillbilly dirt-dick truckers run them.

CB access is free.
Cellphone access needs to also be free.
Only then will CB be at risk of dying out.

I'm actually thinking of going AC with modified alternators next. All alternators generate AC nativity but the regulator in the back of them convert to DC

"explosive batteries", perhaps?

srsly, when you do the crossover thing the voltage of the batteries is additive but the capacity is unchanged...while if you connect them in parallel you get more capacity, same voltage.

if you're going to take it to such an extreme. Why not just bite the bullet and get an amateur radio license?

I guess it's an illustration of "it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it":
My grandfather's desk is full of old penises he uses to talk to people on the other side of the world (bouncing off the ionosphere or something, so he tells me). And i often have to climb around his roof stringing up various old cocks of various wattages. He could have more watts, with his qualifications he's allowed plenty, but he doesn't want to cockslap people. He keeps it all big enough to do what he wants to do - but otherwise small and manageable, it's just a hobby for him it's like the internet 0.1a.
He's been doing it all his life (age approaching 90), and makes with own hands a significant amount of the equipment he uses - I guess that's how they had to make do back in the war eh. But he's still gets gleams in his eye planning his next new-fangled purchases (it's just hard to find circuit diagrams of this new stuff, of course it's the grandson (me) who has to search the net for these infernal jpgs)

Roid, you have no idea what your talking about here. You not only cant do what I do as a ham, you aren't aloud to have the fun I have. Plus as I mentioned in the beginning of this thread, the arrogance with them is not fun. Hams are limited to 1500 watts, no language, and structured air time.

It's like comparing a ride on an old Honda 125 on the way to the store for a loaf of bread to a full leathers week long road trip to Sturgis... Whole different thing.. Both use a bike, but they aren't even in the same galaxy

CB isnt enforced, ham bands are due to the nature of hams making official complaints. Get it now?

The other thing is CB is quite different in the states than it is down under, quite

You are the spam of the airwaves

Legitimate, short-range use of CB radio is sometimes made difficult by users of illegal high-power transmitters, which are capable of being heard hundreds of miles away. In the United States, the vast number of users and the low financing of the regulatory body mean that the regulations are only actively enforced against the most severe interfering stations, which makes legitimate operations on the Citizen's band unreliable.
