Someone told me today that you can get a chinese iPad knockoff called an iPed or aPad for $100. So i spent the evening reading about tablets, mostly on those weird english language Very-Chinese websites.
(prices all in USD)
Each Tablet Type is in a new Paragraph.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPed
http://apad.tv/aboutapad.html
The $100 Chinese iPad knockoffs turned out to be more like $200 - $400 at http://pricedinchina.com nor http://chinagrabber.com.
(Kotaku says they are around $105, but i'm not seeing it.)
They run Google Android or Windows CE OSes (ie: yes flash works), with resolutions from 800x480 upto around the iPad's resolution.
Since they all played flash, multitasked, and were real cheap - i figure they are all technically better than the iPad in everything but resolution, battery life, and those smooth polished turd animations that Android lacks.
(compare resolutions here)

Up from there there is also a lot of Chinese tablets (which also looked identical to the iPad) with Intel Atom CPUs, Intel 950GSM GPUs, SATA HDDs, running Windows 7. Since they actually ran normal windows, they could run anything a normal PC could. But i wouldn't bother with games since the 950GSM GPU has no HW T&L (forcing the CPU to do it, which will take forever coz it's only an Atom CPU which barely has the power to handle flash animations. Software 3D rendering will likely bring it to a screeching halt). Anyway they were around $900 - $1000
Coupling the Atom CPU to an even worse GPU was a terrible idea IMHO. They should couple it to a nvidia GPU like they did with the Ion platform.
Oh man... if someone would make an Ion based tablet PC - it would be PERFECTION!

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=joojoo
Then i find the JooJoo. A just-as-new Tablet PC based on the marvelous Ion platform (Intel Atom CPU with an Nvidia GPU). Horray! But it doesn't seem to have a proper SATA HDD, just a pidly little SDD card slot.
And to make it even more insane - the thing runs LINUX. HAHAHAHAHA. Why couple a gaming GPU with linux, wtf. Anyway....
Thankfully it seems it's possible to install Windows 7 on it. So i can play my games. Yippie, this is sounding good.
It has a huge resolution of 1366 x 768, wider than the iPad
The JooJoo is $500.
I really wish it had an internal SATA HDD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad
IIRC the iPad is around $500. Has no SATA HDD. And no flash support, wtf. Resolution is 1024 768
But it has good battery life (10hours+!), and a very slick interface (dare i say world-class?) that makes grown men flutter.

I doubt i've mentioned everything. If i've missed anything could you please tell us. I only just found the JooJoo at the last minute so i'm pretty lazy.

heh, interesting.

much as I like sata hdd's, you're better off with a SSD hard drive. gets rid of the moving parts.

That way they can fail without moving. (SSDs actually have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to reliability at the moment.)

The JooJoo sounds pretty nice. But the lack of storage space in it freaks me out.
It only has 4GB of onboard SolidState (ie: internal flash) storage.

It has a USB port, so i guess you could plug in an external HDD, but what are you going to do - tape it to the back of joojoo's case? Kinda defeats the purpose of clean handheld portability.

And it has wireless network connectivity of course. So perhaps the best way to use it is in perpetual communication to another PC (to use as storage). It just seems kinda weird to have to copy over any game you want to play first (then deleting it after). I'm not sure many modern games could even fit onto 4 GB, coz i imagine a sizable portion of that 4GB will be already taken up by windows 7.

What do you think

the JooJoo has an onboard nVidia GeForce 9400M, which is rather impressive - you can play games with it. Perhaps there are some netbooks with this too - i'll have to look. I'm keen on the tablet form factor and low cost multi-touch screen, which i regard as futuristic in a jetpacks & hovercars kindof way.
Might be able to finally leave the mouse behind. The prospect of playing games with this form factor makes me excited!
