I took up fixed gear bicycle racing on the track last year. High speed, no brakes, close quarters. Very fast and exciting.

I race at Dick Lane Velodrome here in Atlanta. The track is 1/5 of a mile long and maximum baking is 36 degrees.

Wait...why don't they have breaks? Is the weight trade off that worth?

It's just the type of bike it is. Track bikes just don't have breaks. It's a fixed gear, meaning it is direct drive with no free wheel. If the back wheel is turning so are the pedals, there is no coasting.

Here's a youtube clip of a match sprint race on my home track. The guy in the National champion jersey is a friend of mine and the one who got me into track racing (he doing about 40 mph comming out of turn 4 on the last lap). The vid shows the banking of the track fairly well.

Lookin' good. I work in the city and see single-track bike messengers all the time. The way they skid-pedal-skid-pedal-skid to a stop is really fun and interesting to watch. My brother is into single track as well. It's definitely cool. I couldn't imagine it myself.

I'm doing Friday night sprints now. Those are a bunch of fun. I have my 200 meter time trial time down to 13.88 seconds. I want to break 13 before the end of the year.

We had our first Festival of Speed this past weekend. I set a personal best in the 200 meter time trial (13.38 seconds). Here is some video of one of the mens races.
