I know or can guess the following things:

The Material Defender was sent to all of the moons in the Solar System to destroy an alien virus, and in doing this infected his own ship. When he went to Valhalla tower, PTMC downloaded the virus from the ship and put in their prototype warp core. (Or they tested it on the moons and they lost control)

Then they send him to clear out more mines, and at the last mine he discovers it's a large starship rather than a planetoid.

When he tries to make his jump back to Earth, his warp core's logic bomb activates and instead sends him hurling into a son.

Luckily for him Red Acropalis was there to save him. He agrees to help them find schwitzher, who then gives them information to clear their name with Suzuki, who is killed by the Mercs, and you're accused of being terrorists. Then you need to recover the phoenix and some other stuff get the Magma etc. then you answer a distress call from the Expediator which later destroys Shiva.

Now here are my questions

What was the planetoid? They never explained it in Mercenary other than it was of alien origin.
Why did Dravis try and kill him?
How did Red Acropalis get hold of a pyro?

We will never see because D3 raped the original Storyline (yes. D1/2 *had* a small one Wink) IMHO. that's the thing I do not like about D3.

But here are my views from D1/2 storyline:
What was the planetoid? >> Build from the material the alien robots got from all the mines you destroyed (own opinion).

Why did Dravis try and kill him? >> He did not. He had no reason... in my opinion. Accident. From D3 storyline: MD "saw too much" or whatever

How did Red Acropalis get hold of a pyro >> Why is the sky blue? why do PTMC mines have no gravity? Smile

They said in the beginning of D3 that the warp core was set to malfunction if he initiated a jump back to the Sol System.

Kinda, in teh cinematic before level 1 (if I remember correctly) it said that Dravis sabotged the core by sending a signal to it (they even had a little animation on a moniter to demonstrate.)

Wherever this scene was, it wasn't in the D2 cinematics... the only one pushing a button there was the MD - which is also to see in his flashback in the D3 intro (why would he have memories from what Dravis did?).

Also: If Dravis would really be behind this why would he constantly scream "report your status" when the pyro drifts direction to that sun?

However I still doubt Dravis "story" was planned this way when they made D2...

(I meant a cinematic in D3, my bad.)

He would be screaming it to make it look like he actually cared...

Dravis transmitted along with his message, a virus to the warp core (a logic bomb virus) that would send MD1032 right into that system when he tried to jump.

About the planetoids

I think those are where they originally found the virus. In Mercenary Dravis tells you that they found one drifting in Zeta Aquile and you go and investigate and it's really weird.

i think that these questions were supposed to be answered in 4 and 5.
scyphi's descent 4 project comes up with some theories on the aliens but really they are still just aliens...

the red acropolis probably had a pyro because it was a standard type of ship. perhaps multi-purpose and they must have needed one in their studies on mars for one reason or another. one could be to protect the station from those dual-conc firing scooter-things, as when the ced attacked the station with plain conc missiles they tore the station apart.
well the team probably bought one, okay? but they could not arm it with much. thats why you have blue lasers and concs only. just standard equipment. make sense?

dravis was probably just one of those evil minds. he may have decided he wanted to cheat his way into a very powerful position as suzuki's and had to take out anyone in his way. if the material defender had died, he would have done it, and who knows what else? world domination seems extreme, so perhaps he was simply evil. either that, or he believed it could be used for good. but in the mercinary campaign after you infect sweitzer's lab dravis tells you that at this rate they would be able to "control the universe!" so i believe he was power-hungry. think of hitler.
make sense?

PTMC mines had no gravity because the guys at parallax said so. otherwise they would have tried to program that into the engine. or maybe they were unable to figure out a "good" way to put gravity into the engine. make sense?

the sky is blue because god made it that way and he said it was good. make sense?

now...

WHY did MD1032 have the name of vertigo 1 only in descent 2 (i know about the part in the d3 intro movie but it was from d2, where he recalled what happened) and MD1032 in 1 and 3?
figure that one out.

Thats very simple actually. "Vertigo 1" is a callsign, MD1032 is an employee number.

Because sometimes, elements of a story are lost in the shuffle of having several people working on different projects at different times. Or did you think one guy sat down and hammered the whole of the story in one sitting... also, and it's been a long time since I looked at any of them.... didn't he WORK for them in 1 and 3 but not so much in 2? Maybe I'm wrong, but it would make sense for his employers to refer to him that way, but not when he's on the outs... meh.

The real question here is: Why do you care? It's a 15 year old game with a story that had very little to do with anything... they didn't make the game for the story... they made it for the spinny shooty parts.

Yeah, and Descent 3 begs the question: are there any aliens at all involved? (i even made a separate thread for this sole question).

Since in Descent 3 it was revealed that it was the PTMC who developed the "alien" virus...

No, you've got that incorrect. PTMC (under direction from Dravis) modified and changed the alien virus. That's what was revealed in Descent 3.

Ah, if that's the case, then allright. Then the quote from shareware Descent "we're gonna send someone to study the remains of that megahulk immediately" starts making sense now Very Happy

On the other hand, PTMC has had the intel on all of the robots, even the ones inhabiting Tycho Brahe. They must've been PTMC mining mechs, not coming from aliens. So it might be assumed that the alien agent is reduced just to the boss robots.

The end movie to descent 3 has the last scene deleted. Contained a depiction of the aliens

anyone who finds the actual end movie with that scene wins a cookie

hint Daniel McMillan

other than that read the books

Quite unlike the mechs we've seen throughout D1 and 2...

That's because the mechs in D1\2 were all PTMC robots who were infected with the virus. It seems as though the GuideBot was the only robot not effected.
